Surgical dermatology
Our dermatologists provide dermatologic surgical treatment for those diagnosed with skin cancer or for those wishing to undertake excision of benign skin growths.
Our dermatologists where necessary will also perform Mohs Microscopic Surgery. This is a specialised surgical procedure used to remove skin cancers when:
- Tissue conservation is important (nose, ears, lips, eyelids, hands and feet);
- There’s a high risk of recurrence (for tumours near the nasal opening, ear canal, eyelid margin or when tumours wrap around nerves);
- The cancer is large or aggressive;
- The cancer has previously recurred following traditional surgery or non surgical treatments;
- The cancer is on someone with a suppressed immune system.
Removal of any skin cancer or benign growth results in a defect (hole in the skin) that must be repaired. The ‘best’ repair is determined by your dermatologic surgeon’s assessment of skin laxity in your surgical area, Possible repair options are:
1. Direct side-to-side closure:
The defect is stitched together in a straight line. Whilst always preferred, side by side closure is not alway possible.
2. Flap repair:
This involves loosening adjacent skin, to pull or push this across into the defect area. Flaps come in various shapes and sizes and are always designed for the individual, based on what will sit best and look best once healed.
3. Skin graft:
This is a piece of skin taken from elsewhere on your body and stitched over the area like a patch. Grafts may be full thickness or partial thickness – your surgeon will explain why a graft is being used if required.
4. Secondary intention healing:
This involves allowing the body to heal itself and is only an option in certain body sites. Disadvantages include slow healing however, advantages include no need to suture the wound and a reduced size of the scar.

Cosmetic (aesthetic) dermatology is an area of dermatology that focuses on improving the appearance of the skin for cosmetic purposes, rather than for treating a medical condition. Cosmetic Dermatologists are not only Registered Medical Specialists in Dermatology but Dermatologists who have undergone additional training in cosmetic treatments.
